A folding mosquito screen is a screen that folds back on itself rather than sliding in a track or swinging on a hinge. It’s built for openings that are too wide, too tall or too irregular for a standard screen — patio doors, balcony openings, terrace doors, garden room glazing and commercial entrances.
Standard insect screens are made for windows. They come in fixed sizes, they’re mounted in a frame, and they cover an opening up to about a metre wide. A patio door is two or three metres wide. A terrace opening can be six. A standard screen doesn’t cover it, and a screen that doesn’t cover the full opening leaves the room open to everything.
A folding screen is made for that scale. It folds back to a compact stack at the side of the opening when not in use, and pulls across when needed. It’s custom-cut to the opening, so there’s no edge gap. And it’s built with materials that survive the wind, the weather and the pets that use the opening every day.
Why Large Openings Need a Different Screen Standard sizes don’t reach. A patio door, terrace opening or garden room glazing is wider than any standard screen. A screen that covers half the opening leaves the other half open.
Wind load is higher. A large panel presents a large surface area to the wind. A screen that isn’t rigid flexes, works loose at the fixings and eventually tears. Folding systems are built with rigid frames and tensioned mesh to handle that.
Traffic is heavier. Large openings are usually the main route between inside and outside. They open dozens of times a day, and they’re used by people carrying things, children, and pets. A screen that needs a free hand to open gets propped.
Pets use them constantly. A patio door is often the dog’s route to the garden and the cat’s route to the balcony. The mesh has to resist clawing, pushing and impact — not just insects.
The opening is often irregular. Older properties, converted barns and architect-designed homes often have openings that aren’t square. A folding screen can be cut to the actual shape; a standard screen can’t.
The Four Folding Systems Telescopic. The screen extends and retracts along a telescopic track, so it can cover openings of different widths without a fixed housing. Suitable for openings where the width varies or where a fixed housing isn’t practical.
Roll-back. The screen rolls back into a housing at the side of the opening when not in use. Suitable for openings where a compact stack is preferred and the housing can be accommodated.
Guardrail. The screen is mounted with a guardrail frame, which adds rigidity for large or exposed openings. Suitable for terraces and balconies where wind load is a factor.
Double door. Two panels meet in the middle and open from the centre, so people and pets pass through without stopping. Suitable for the main route between inside and outside.
Each system suits a different opening. The choice depends on the width, the exposure, the traffic and whether the opening needs to be clear when the screen isn’t in use.
The Mesh 304 stainless steel mesh. Densely woven, impact-resistant, non-deforming. It resists clawing, biting and pushing without the weave stretching or tearing. It’s non-absorbent, so it doesn’t support mould growth in humid climates, and it’s rust- and corrosion-resistant in coastal and salt-air environments. It holds its shape in wind and doesn’t go brittle in cold.
Ultra-fine mesh. A finer weave for smaller insects and fine dust. It offers better light transmission and a more discreet appearance, but is less resistant to sustained pet contact than stainless steel.
For openings used by pets, stainless steel is the specification.
Why It Matters Beyond Comfort Mosquitoes are the world’s deadliest animal. Malaria accounts for more than 600,000 deaths a year. Dengue fever causes more than 100 million infections annually. Zika, West Nile and chikungunya add to the total.
Physical barriers — a well-fitted screen — are the first line of defence. Unlike chemical repellents, they carry no resistance risk and no chemical exposure for children or pets. For a large opening, a folding screen is the only practical way to apply a physical barrier across the full width.
Where Folding Screens Are Used Patio doors, terrace doors, balcony openings, garden room glazing, French doors, bi-fold openings, sliding door openings, commercial entrances, restaurant terraces, hotel balconies and resort pool areas.
For openings up to six metres wide, a folding system can be produced as a single unit or as multiple panels, depending on the configuration.
