In tropical and subtropical climates, the screen has two jobs instead of one. It has to keep mosquitoes out — and it has to survive air that is warm, wet and heavy for most of the year.

Standard screens fail at the second job before they fail at the first. Synthetic mesh absorbs moisture, stays damp, and supports mould growth. Cheap frames warp and lose their fit. Metal fittings corrode. Within a season, the screen that was meant to keep the room clean has become part of the problem.

What Tropical Climates Do to a Screen Synthetic mesh stays damp. Nylon and fiberglass absorb moisture from the air and hold it. In a tropical climate, the mesh is never fully dry. Mould establishes in the weave and releases spores into the room every time air passes through.

Mould grows in tracks and housings. Water collects in the tracks, rollers and hinges, and mould grows there. It’s hard to see and harder to remove.

Mosquitoes are present year-round. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus breed continuously in warm, wet conditions. They bite during the day, and they’re the vectors for dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

Monsoon rain drives water into the opening. Heavy rain doesn’t just fall — it’s driven sideways by wind. Water reaches the screen, the track and the mesh.

UV is intense. Strong sun degrades cheap plastic components and synthetic mesh over time.

Heat warps cheap frames. Thin-gauge and synthetic frames distort in high temperatures, losing their fit.

Specification for Tropical Climates Mesh: 304 stainless steel. It’s non-absorbent, so it doesn’t hold moisture and doesn’t support mould growth. It’s corrosion-resistant in humid and coastal air, and it doesn’t go brittle under UV. It resists clawing, biting and impact without deforming. For tropical climates, this is the only sensible mesh specification.

Frame: aluminium alloy. Aluminium doesn’t absorb moisture, doesn’t warp in heat, doesn’t rust and doesn’t flex under contact. Powder-coated finish improves corrosion resistance in coastal and monsoon conditions.

System type. Roll-back systems keep the mesh enclosed in a housing when not in use, which protects it from rain and reduces mould risk. Telescopic systems suit openings where the width varies. Double-door systems suit the main route between inside and outside.

Fixing: screw-fixed for exposed openings, adhesive for sheltered and rental properties. Confirm the fixing method for the exposure.

Cleaning access. Clip-out panels or accessible mesh, so the screen can be rinsed and dried regularly.

Maintenance in Tropical Climates Rinse monthly. In year-round humidity, monthly rinsing prevents mould from establishing in the weave.

Rinse more often during the rainy season. Monsoon and wet-season rain drives moisture into the screen. Rinse and dry after heavy rain.

Clean the tracks and housings. Water collects in the tracks and housings. Wipe them dry and check for mould.

Dry the mesh fully before retracting. A mesh retracted damp will grow mould in the housing.

Check the fixing. Adhesive can soften in extreme heat. Check the bond after the first hot season and reapply if needed.
